Abiding bet
Cold meaning: A commitment held long-term, proportioned to evidence, open to refutation, acted on because the question is live and waiting is not free.
The religion's stance toward its own tenets. Not faith in the believing-against-evidence sense — that word is rejected. "Abide" lends gravity to "bet"; "bet" lends earth to "abide"; the friction between the two words is the meaning. The core bet: objective goodness exists. Its honest yield: the future is likelier better than it would be in a value-random universe. Not a guarantee — more than random.
The horizon
Cold meaning: The direction of greater good — real, brightening, never reached.
What Acceptantism means by God. Not an entity, not a summit, not a completed object. The always-further good as it stands toward any finite climber. Real as a direction — the way true north is real even on nights you cannot see it. The horizon brightens because the terrain ahead is objectively richer: more good to discover, already there, waiting to be found the way the seams of beauty are found. The brightness is not emitted by an agent — it is a feature of the landscape itself. There is no noon; the brightening has no upper bound. Hope grounded precisely: without this direction, "better" is drift; with it, error correction is approach.
The voyage
Cold meaning: The practice of orienting toward the horizon — the daily and weekly work of the religion.
Drawn from the old Irish voyage-tales, where sailors leave the known coast and find islands no map predicted. The voyage is the life lived in the direction of greater beauty, goodness, and truth. It does not end. Its value is in the sailing, not the arrival — because arrival, in this framework, does not happen. The shore is real and cannot be possessed.
Honesty note: The image is borrowed from the immram tradition of early Irish literature. The oldest tales carry the structure we use; later medieval retellings Christianised the voyage toward a promised paradise. Our Brendan is the discoverer, not the saint.
The seams
Cold meaning: Discoveries of beauty and goodness found along the way — already there, not manufactured.
As in mining: a seam is already in the rock, waiting to be struck. A mathematical structure with no practical use that turns out to be beautiful. A form of cooperation between species that narrow logic would not predict. An act of moral imagination no gene selected for. The seams are the islands in the voyage — wonders met, not made.
Ruach
Cold meaning: The moving force known only by what it stirs.
Hebrew for breath and wind. Older than the Christian Spirit, older than any doctrine built on top of it. Borrowed for one thing it names better than any other: the quickening — the moment when something in you responds to beauty or goodness you did not manufacture. You know the wind by the sail it fills, not by seeing the wind itself.
Honesty note: Ruach is a Hebrew word. The Celtic sound-resonance (the -ach) may be enjoyed but is coincidence, not kinship — Hebrew and Irish are unrelated languages.
Footing
Cold meaning: Where you stand on the slope — the practice-register word for your current position.
Finding your footing means knowing honestly where you are: what you see, what you don't, what you've accepted and what remains unsolved. It is the starting point of the morning practice — not aspiration but inventory. You cannot orient toward the horizon without knowing the ground under your feet.
Error correction
Cold meaning: Finding what is wrong and fixing it. The deepest form of goodness in the religion.
Error correction is what makes progress real rather than imaginary. Without it, beliefs calcify; with it, every correction is approach — one step closer to objective beauty, goodness, or truth. The religion treats its own tenets as conjectures subject to correction. Finding an error is practising the religion, not attacking it. This is why Square 11 of the grid — Error Correction — sits in the Absolute row.
God
Cold meaning: The brightening horizon of endless good.
Used carefully in Acceptantism, always in reach of its definition. Not an entity that watches, answers, or intervenes. Not itself good the way a being is good. Real as a direction — the always-further good toward which progress is genuine and unbounded. "Limitless" describes the ascent (no ceiling), never a completed object. The word is kept because it is the word humanity has always used for this direction, and renaming it would be dishonest about what is being claimed.
